GOLF IN CAROLINA MOUNTAINS REACHES HIGHER LEVEL IN NEW GUIDE

From Tee to GreenA publishing venture catering almost exclusively to golf in the Carolina Mountains has been released. From Tee to Green in the Carolina Mountains is an on-line publication available for purchase at Montford Books & More or on-line through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The golf guide contains more than 15,800 words - to inform and entertain readers plus visitors who prefer higher elevations. It is being published by IUniverse of Bloomington, Indiana, which represents authors in several categories and has working agreements with Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Dalton Bookstores.

The publication includes a sponsored directory of more than 40 preferred courses and is priced at $12.95. The book phone order number is 1.800.288.4677. The website is www.iuniverse.com. The ISBN number is 978.4502.6310-8.

The guide is primarily based on columns originally written since 2006 by former sportswriter Chuck Werle for the prestigious Laurel of Asheville magazine. Readers will learn about the finest public and semi-private courses in the region and even a few in Southeast Tennessee and Upstate Georgia – all in the mountains. The cover features two golfers teeing off at Mount Mitchell Golf Club, with snow showing on top of the mountain.

Editor Paul Howey of the Laurel offered his own comments. "Chuck Werle is the recognized "Voice of Golf" in Western North Carolina. For years, he's kept our readers informed and entertained with his analysis of area golf courses and the many back stories of the sport."

Twenty-eight brief chapters cover other subjects, such as the success of famous North Carolina-based course architects Tom Fazio and the late Donald Ross. An advisory board has rated the best courses in the mountains, and golf enthusiasts will learn about expected environmental developments for the Cliffs at High Carolina, the first American course designed by Tiger Woods.

The first chapter features an exclusive interview with Jim Anthony, the founder of the eight Cliffs communities in both Carolinas.

There will also be information on renting llamas as caddies at an executive course near Brevard and tips on shipping used golf clubs to the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, the world’s largest sand traps.

Readers will learn that tee shots travel farther in the highest elevations, where the landscape is often a stunning distraction. There are fairways with boulders larger than your vehicle, waterfalls near many greens and even one river winding through a course near Mount Mitchell with huge trout you can catch after playing golf. The 43 courses come with an attitude to match the altitude. Just like those trout.

Author Chuck Werle covered the Masters for both the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle. He has played golf – badly – at some of the finest courses in all 50 states. It just took him 45 years. Werle has been a journalist or public relations counselor for all of those years at major newspapers, corporations and agencies. He earned his BA degree in Journalism from Michigan State University. Established author Marie Bartlett of Arden and Asheville book editor A.D. Reed provided valuable counsel on the guide project.

For other information on ordering the guide, contact Werle, Principal of Carolina Image Builders, at 828.299.0813. He is a member of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. His email address is imagebuc@charter.net.
